4/10/21 Session Zero: Little Susie
Soba (half-human/half Dragonborn) had just entered Phandalin, making his way towards the Adventures board near the Inn, however before he could begin to read, a little girl ran up to him.
“Please help!” Weeping profusely, sniffling, and trembling. “They're going to kill the unicorn!”
Soba asks her questions and learns that ‘they’ say the unicorn is dangerous and at the girls, pleading decides to help.
Roma (A rock gnome) just entered the town as well and arrived at the Shrine of Luck. She dropped a grape in with the other offerings, no one except a worker was there since the sun was starting to set. She turned to leave in time to see a large man running after a little girl.
She asked what was going on, and while Soba tried to explain the little girl ran up hurrying them. Saying, “If you’re going to help, we have to hurry, they're going to kill it!”
The girl runs off again waving for them to follow every so many paces.
Eisley (The fallen Aasimar) chose to scavenge for food and shelter in the small forest of Phandalin. While searching she hears a ‘Fffft’ of an arrow flying and striking a tree. Using her wings and no small amount of stealth she perches in a lush branch and watched.
A large lumbering man stumbled forward. Struggles to pull his arrow out of the tree manages to do it but lands hard on his rump.
2 figures emerge behind the guy.
A harsh and gruff voice snarled. “Jimmy! The water is that way!” The man in weathered Ranger's armor pointed. His garb looked to have seen many seasons of disrepair, he grabbed Jimmy by the collar and dragged him off.
“Sorry, Doyle…” The man who has seen far too many winters mumbled.
The trio vanished from Eisley’s Sight. She doesn’t like the look of them and stays where she is but summons her artifact dagger from its pocket dimension.
The duo chasing the little girl started asking questions learned.
She was the one who found the unicorn, that she told her parents, that her uncle Doyle and cousin Jimmy were part of the group hunting the thing, that her dad was sick, and that the horn had magical properties.
It’s well known that though not illegal, it’s a bad omen to kill a unicorn. They are pure and considered divine creatures. Holy and to be protected.
The little girl brings up how she made a unicorn at home, but needs a horn, and sick’s ‘don’t work’. Roma suggests candy but warns it may be tempting to eat, while the child agrees that she likes candy. Soba suggests spun sugarcane or rocks. The little one is so excited and asks them to keep an eye out for rocks, then gasps “or shells!”
Eisley Overhears this trio and being curious follows.
As they follow the water, the little girl, now revealed to be Susie stops them from seeing a figure in black a ways off. She whispers for them to follow and uncovers a brush hidden trail. Small and agile Roma and Susie pass stealthy, but large Soba is moving the brush too much, he stops and watched the figure, whose back is to them.
Susie gasps as they emerge to the pond and see the unicorn drinking.
Roma decides to try and scare it off. One rock hit the water, and the creature doesn’t seem to notice. Susie helps her sneak closer to a down branch to hide behind. Roma throws another rock, which hits it in the flank, sending it bolting.
A curse and an arrow that narrowly misses the majestic horse are heard. There is a tree line hiding the person. But he soon emerges, taking aim at the running horse.
Eisley Jumps down and Shouts for him to stop startled him, but he tries to recover taking longer to aim.
Susie gasps. “An angel!”
Roma is thrown for a loop. Unicorns and Angles all in one day!
Meanwhile: Soba tosses a rock loudly into the pond, intending to get the dark hooded figure's attention. Nothing.
He then throws a rock near his boot. Still nothing. He exits the brush, hands-on his swords, and stealthily sneaks up 2 arms lengths away. Nothing.
He tosses another rock, it hits the figure between the shoulder blades, and he wobbles, then stops.
So, cautiously hands back on his swords ready to cross draw, Soba moves around the front and sees a horrific sight.
The man has a pike driven through the bottom of his chin through his head, being propped up by the stick dug into the dirt.
Investigating Soba, I can see that he hasn’t been that long. He searches the man and finds some lock-picks, 3 coppers, and a map of the forest with a strange black smear at the northwest most corner, appearing to cover a structure of some sort.
He pockets the items then sneaks to the tree line where he just heard an arrow and a girl scream ‘stop!’
Using his intimidating presence, he terrifies poor Jimmy who crashes into Doyle knocking the two down and sending the arrow flying up and away from the fleeing unicorn.
Doyle curses and elbows Jimmy in the face. “Get off!” Moving to get up.
Poor Jimmy has a bloodied nose and lays on the ground blubbering, and closely seems to resemble the little girl. Even the faces they make while crying.
Soba tries to intimidate him, but it fails. Doyle focuses more on the Dragonborn seeing him as the only threat not afraid of the women/children he has on the other side of him. As such when they try to take him down, Doyle knocks Soba away but is left vulnerable to Roma and Eisley who tag team to hogtie Doyle up.
Soba ties up Jimmy who puts no resistance. When they try to speak to Doyle he just curses and threatens them using every insult under the sun.
Soba is asked if he found anything, he says he would prefer to wait. Not thinking it best to say what he found in front of the full group.
While Roma kept thinking she couldn’t kill them due to little Susie being here.
Jimmy was going to be interrogated, but Doyle shouts at him to shut up.
Soba breaks off a branch and shoved it longways into the guy's mouth. Effectively silencing him.
Soba wipes the blood away from Jimmy’s busted nose with some leaves.
Jimmy nods in thanks and begins to explain that they were here to kill the unicorn because it was dangerous.
As the scene unfolds they learn that Brian was part of a thief's guild who had been swiping things like money, food and even breaking into houses. Doyle killed him and left him there as a message to the thieves guild he’s a part of.
Roma tries to persuade Doyle to let them help, but he doesn’t trust her. Or any strangers! However, Eisley persuades him by saying she doesn’t really care but does want to help.
The strange candor gets through and he agrees to let them help. Soba adds one condition, to leave the unicorn alone. He grudgingly agrees.
He explains why he tried to kill the unicorn, to begin with, is that it belongs to the Thieves guild. “ do you know what kind of people deal and black-market trading of unicorns? We don’t need that kind of element around here!”
They untie the pair and are led back to town.
Eisley carries Susie on her shoulders. “Yay! Angel!” Since it's now quite dark.
Susie tries to get everyone to stay at her place, but Doyle tells her to get home and they will stay at his.
“Aww, but I want to stay with the angel!” Eisley responds with, “maybe tomorrow.” And sends her home.
They are offered, Mead, bread and stew. It’s not the best, but enough to fill the belly, then are given pallets to sleep on the floor. Which beats spending coin at the Inn. They settle in to rest for the evening and await the coming day’s adventures.
